Imagine a cabin in the high country in late autumn as the sun begins to set behind the ridge.

Autumn days grow short in November
Shadows lengthen and soon disappear;
Frost is forming outside on the cold window-glass
As the twilight grows ever near;
There's a chill in the air on the wind from the north,
But the fire is my comfort and friend;
Watching embers and ashes play games on the hearth,
As the smoke rides away on the wind.

And it's twilight in November,
But the fire keeps my spirit strong
And the strains on the north wind drift over the hilltops
As they echo that lonely old song.
I sure hope this winter don't last too long.

Now the sun goes to bed much too early;
Mother Nature has darkened her torch;
And the whispering wind makes its way through the trees,
There's a dusting of snow on the porch.
And the lakes in the highlands must be freezing by now,
But the logs are piled high by the fire,
And hope for the springtime will help keep me warm
As this blanket of snow rises higher.
